DMA and Google Maps: Impacts for European users

7 June 2024

On March 6, 2024, the European Union introduced the Digital Markets Act (DMA), legislation designed to regulate technology giants and encourage competition in the digital market. One of the law's key measures concerns Google and its mapping service, Google Maps.

What impact will the DMA have on Google Maps?

In September 2024, while the DMA came into force on March 6, 2024, not much has changed.

When you do a Google search for a city. The first results are always :

  1. Sponsored ads (companies pay Google to appear first in a search)
  2. The Google Maps
  3. A list of businesses with a Google My Business profile in your search area.

Simply click on "directions" to open the Google Maps page.

Changes to Google My Business listings

Previously, the insert with the company's address that appeared on Google My Business listings could be used to open Google Maps, whereas today you can no longer click on this map.
